A Court of Thorns and Roses – Sarah J. Maas

In A Court of Thorns and Roses we meet our main character Feyre. Her family doesn’t have a lot of money, and Feyre is the one that brings food on the table by hunting in a forest close to her cottage. The forest is a cold and bleak place in the winter, there aren’t a lot of animals around. So when Feyre spots both a wolf and a deer in the forest, she can’t resist killing it for flesh (and money). But it means she has to kill a predator, and she has to pay a high price.

Feyre end up getting dragged to a magical kingdom, in exchange for taking the life of a faerie. Feyre’s captor’s face is half hidden thanks to a jeweled mask. And that is not the only secret his piercing green eyes have. Feyre is closely guarded in the court of her captor and when Feyre starts unravelling the secrets of this new world, her feelings are also changing.

Hostility turns in passion and the faerie lands are more dangerous than ever. Feyre must fight for breaking a curse, or lose him forever.

So, before I kick of this review: this was a re-read. I read the book when it was released (which is, two years ago I think?) and I wasn’t a big fan. However, people kept telling me that book #2 was better, so now that I own the series. I had to re-read this one, because I forgot quite a lot. And I have to admit, I changed my mind.

Yes, it is all very cliché. The whole book. I’ll for certain give you that. But during my re-read it felt as if Feyre was more grown up (but I guess it was me that grew up). People also say you can view this book as a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast, but I wouldn’t pick it up of you want to read a re-telling. Because it doesn’t really feel like a re-telling.

And yeah, the romance (or love, depends what you prefer to use) is cliché, BUT it doesn’t feel cliché. Only if you think about it you’ll notice the cliché-ness of the romance. But Maas’ writing style feels quite grown up, which doesn’t make this book feel like an actually YA book.

 

I would recommend you this book, if you’re a bit older. I really noticed I didn’t enjoy it when I was 17, but I do enjoy it now I am 19. But also because my taste has changed, and I am slowly appreciating books like these more and more.

 

I ended up giving this book 4 out of 5 stars.
